Comparison: Download Managers

Comparison: Download Managers

Most Internet traffic is the videos and songs are circulating out there, either via streaming, P2P or direct download.

The latter concept, direct download, has gained popularity in recent years. It is no longer downloading anything directly from an FTP address. Now you can share files of all types and sizes using sites like Rapidshare, Megaupload or Mediafire.

The main problem of direct discharge is you have to wait a few seconds to download the file in question and can only download one file at a time, unless you want to pay a premium account. This is where programs such as those analyzed below.

jDownloader, Universal Share Downloader, Tucan, RDesc, Mipony and other download managers like are specialized for direct download. Its aim is to download files from Rapidshare and the like automatically, doing the dirty work for you without recourse to anything.

In the variety is the spice

The free hosting sites abound on the Internet. There is something for all tastes and varied capabilities and limitations. This forces many times to split a file into several parts to be able to upload.

Of the programs analyzed, the clear winner in terms of supported sites is Universal Share Downloader, with more than 300 addresses around the world. The rest will continue to serve to the best known, but maybe I'll stop lying if the link is more special.

CTRL + C, CTRL + V

If you download files from Rapidshare or Megaupload often no problem to copy the link (CTRL + C) and paste it into your download program (CTRL + V).

But if you work with a large volume of links, things change. Fortunately, these programs monitor the clipboard or the Web browser and automatically add links to your main window and check if the link is working or has been removed, no matter you add one or twenty.

In particular, Mipony wins, as well as integrating with Internet Explorer and Firefox and monitor the clipboard, has its own Web browser. Universal Share Downloader jDownloader and also monitor clipboard and integrate with Web browsers. For its part, RDesc only monitors the clipboard and Tucan need to add the links manually.

Failed links

One of the main problems of the links Rapidshare, Megaupload or Mediafire is its short duration. Thus it is worth your download manager check if these links work or not.

jDownloader, Universal Share Downloader and Mipony automatically detect failed links, while RDesc and Tucan need to push a button to perform the check.

Captchas and waiting times

There is no point having a direct download manager if you do not get along with captchas, security measure used by major links to make sure that whoever performs the download is a human and not a bot or a program.

While the five programs analyzed recognize captchas, none of them can overcome the waiting time and skip the limitation of a puff at a time with the same IP.

Updates

In connection with the captchas and other protections from Rapidshare, Megaupload and others, managers are required to download updated from time to time to get down files, so that periodic updates are essential.

jDownloader is a clear winner in this area, updated every plugin separately. Second, there are Universal Share Downloader and RDesc, also updated its components but in a more tight for the user.

In the case of Tucan, the update is manual, having to mark the plugins to update.

Conclusions

Broadly, the five tested download managers work very well. Proof of this is the good score they have achieved in Softonic and the number of downloads that have their backs.

Choose one or the other depends on our use of direct download links. jDownloader is properly configured by default, is updated continuously and capture or copy any link you click on your browser.

Universal Share Downloader also gives good results, but its interface is improved.

For its part, Tucan RDesc and are focused completely control the links, deciding which to download and what not, without depending on the program's capture clipboard or not.

Finally, Mipony shares jDownloader ease of use and also has its own integrated Web browser.
